The Design Process
So you have been sent to Crazy Chameleon by a happy client, or maybe you just happened upon us and have looked through our portfolio and think we are a perfect match. So what happens next? Well I am glad you asked!
- First things first, request an estimate by filling out my little estimate questionnaire right here. Give me as much information as you can on your project, so I can evaluate the needs of your project and give you an accurate estimate.
- I review your request, and I’ll email you my initial quote. If my initial quote sounds good to you, we’ll set up a time to talk on the phone or meet for coffee to go over your project in more detail.
- Once we’ve discussed everything your project will require, I’ll put together a detailed proposal that will spell out the exact work to be done, the project time line and billing schedule. I’ll send you your proposal with a copy of my basic terms and conditions, and ask that you return via email the last page of each with your digital signature. This will act as a contract between you and me, governing your project.
- When you send me your signed proposal and basic terms, I’ll also ask for the deposit at that time. Once I have those three things: the paid deposit, signed proposal and signed terms; your spot in my design schedule is officially reserved. I will assign a start date for the project at this time as well, based on my current client load and the depth of work required to complete your site.
- Work begins on your project once everything above is complete. The first thing I will need is any hosting information from you. Your domain registration and hosting account so I can set up a landing page to announce your new site. If you already have a site and will continue to have it live till the new site is complete, then I will not need this stuff till later in the process. If you will be hosting with me, I will only need your domain registration information.
- Next, we’ll start with the design aspect. I’ll create one mock-up of your site (different area layouts may be displayed, depending on the project) designed according to your answers to a design questionnaire I provide you with, as well as the needs and goals of your site that we identified in our initial chat and any subsequent emails. You get up to 3 revisions of your site’s layout design. Any revisions beyond the first 3 may be subject to a fee at my discretion. I will warn you in advance if you are about to go over the allotted 3 revisions and the fees associated with doing so before we proceed with further revisions.
- While I am working on the coding, I suggest you get going on your content. I will provide you with a breakdown of the pages your site should have, as well as any pages you might want to add outside of the usual pages. All content must be delivered to me in digital format already edited along with any photos you may want on those pages.
- Once you’ve approved the layout design, I get right to work on the coding. Depending on the size of your project this can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, but I almost always know about how long it will take me to complete, and I let you know that both in the proposal and when I actually get started on the coding aspect of the project.
- When I’ve got the code all set and ready to install, I’ll send you an invoice for the final payment (payment must be completed before install takes place) and ask you for your hosting account info (if you are not hosting with me or have not already given it to me at the beginning of the process) so I can set up any databases your site needs, upload all the required files, and actually install your site. Setting up your site after installation can take a couple days (again, this depends on the size of your project).
10. After everything is set up and your site is in place, I give you access to your site and teach you how to use it! Once you’re comfortable with your site, I’ll ask you for the official sign off, at which point you agree that your project is complete, and I wish you all the best for your shiny new site!
I should mention I am a stickler to details, if for some reason we should deviate from this process and the steps above; I get a bit testy and may need to be soothed with wine and chocolates.
